Job Description
While there are many kinds of paint technicians, a large portion of them work in the automotive industry. Paint technicians in the automotive industry paint new cars, repair the paint jobs on old or damaged cars, mix paint, polish vehicles and create customized paint jobs for customers. Vehicle painting is a highly specialized job requiring practice and skill.
Automotive painter is a regulated trade. Qualified individuals may obtain a Certificate of Qualification, which confirms its holder has the skills, knowledge and experience that meet industry standards of practice for the trade. Generally, the time-frame to become competent in the trade of Automotive Painter is approximately two and a half years consisting of on-the-job work experience and in-school training. Upon passing the trade’s certification examination and meeting your school’s registration requirements, the individual may apply to become certified and registered as a journeyperson in the trade. The trade is part of the Interprovincial Red Seal Program—the national standard for the trade across Canada.

Education, Training & Experience
- Valid Drivers License
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Completion of a four-year apprenticeship program
or
A combination of over four years of work experience in the trade and high school, college or industry courses in automotive technology is required to be eligible for trade certification.
- Trade certification for technicians is required by certain provinces.
- Red Seal endorsement is also available to qualified technicians upon successful completion of the interprovincial Red Seal examination. (The Red Seal Interprovincial Standards Program, also known as Red Seal or simply IP, is a set of trade qualifications in Canada, jointly administered by the Federal, Provincial and Territorial governments.)
- Apprenticeship programs are available with apprentices working under certified technicians.
